The Arpad Szenes – Vieira da Silva Foundation, in collaboration with Galerie Jeanne Bucher Jaeger, of Paris, and with the sponsorship of the EDP Foundation, the main patron of the museum, brings to Lisbon an exquisite selection from the gallery artists’ books collection that illustrate one of the most creative periods of art in the early 20th century, and tells the story of art and the artists of the iconic Parisian gallery throughout the 20th century.

In 1925 Jeanne Bucher (1872-1946) installed a gallery-publisher in Paris that became a centre for the disclosure of French and foreign trends and artists. In addition to organising exhibitions, the Jeanne Bucher Gallery promoted artists through its intense work of publishing catalogues, books and objects produced by artists’ in limited editions, which was begun in 1925. By promoting these publications – many of them resulting from collaborations between writers, poets and plastic artists – Jeanne Bucher engaged in her love for books, literature and art. After her death, her successor on the management board of the gallery, Jean-François Jaeger, continued with the gallery’s policy of exhibitions and publications begun by Jeanne Bucher. In addition to the publication of art books Jean-François Jaeger promoted other types of publications, such as catalogues, monographs and limited series of prints, conceived by a great number of artists who they represented. Véronique Jaeger (his daughter and Jeanne Bucher’s great-granddaughter) continues promoting contemporary artists’ editions since 2003.

In this exhibition, devoted to the significant publishing activity of the Jeanne Bucher Gallery between 1925 and 2017, several artists with original works on paper (gouache, drawings) such as Ernst, Marcoussis, Braque, Picasso, Rouault, Matisse, Manessier, Bissière, Dubuffet and Vieira da Silva, among others, are represented ; in addition there are examples of the graphic and / or literary work of artists such as Jean Hugo, Tristan Tzara, René Char, Leopold Senghor and Georges Hugnet.

Maria Helena Vieira da Silva and Arpad Szenes met Jeanne Bucher in 1932 and they kept strong professional and personal ties with the gallery until today.
