Following its presentation at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, this exhibition is now presented at the Guggenheim Bilbao, curated by Flavia Frigeri, curator at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

The exhibition focuses on the artist’s work from the 1930s to the 1980s, exploring her relationship with urban architectural landscapes and the importance of memory in her work. The exhibition is based on a selection of key paintings that reveal the constant and iterative deployment of abstract forms and optical illusions throughout her career. Another key aspect addressed here is the relationship between abstraction and figuration in his work, as manifested in his architectural spaces, where the distinction between the real and imagined urban landscape remains blurred. The artist’s work blends different styles and influences, such as the decorative geometry of Hispano-Arabic tiles, the checkered tablecloths in Pierre Bonnard’s paintings, and the abstraction of Cubism and Futurism. Her personal vocabulary is composed of checkerboards, intersecting lines, elusive perspectives, and receding spaces, suggesting that “a painting is never finished,” as she herself has stated.

This exhibition dedicated to the artist is organized in close collaboration with the gallery that has supported her since the 1930s. An exhibition catalog is published in Italian, English, and French.
