Asia Now

Paris Asian Art Fair

Yang Jiechang, Dani Karavan

Monnaie de Paris, Booth S11

For ASIA NOW the gallery will showcase two solo shows by Chinese Yang Jiechang (b.1956) and Israeli Dani Karavan (1930-2021).

On the occasion of the major solo show Carte Blanche à Yang Jiechang at Guimet Museum in Paris during ASIA NOW, the gallery wishes to exhibit a selection of works by Yang Jiechang ranging from his characteristic calligraphy paintings to the 100 Layers of Ink serie from the 1990s, including his latest creations in porcelain. Born in 1956, Jiechang lives and works between France and Germany since 1988. Known for his mastery of traditional Chinese arts, Jiechang illustrates himself in a wide range of media : painting, installations, videos, performances and sculpture. His artistic training, along with his study of Tao and Zen Buddhism play an important part in his work which combines eastern tradition and spirituality with contemporary themes.

To celebrate 30 years of collaboration with Yang Jiechang, the gallery organized the 2019 exhibition Dark Writings, resonating with the major retrospective Three Souls and Seven Spirits dedicated to him at the Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum. Invited to the Manufacture de Sèvres, Yang Jiechang collaborated with the Manufacture’s decorative craftsmen using the forgotten technique of paste-on-paste for his work Tale of the 11th Day. The artist has created a series of eleven vases entitled Tale of the 11th Day, exhibited from October to December 2021 at the Galerie de Sèvres, Paris, and then presented at the Musée Guimet from July 6 to October 24, 2022 as part of the Carte Blanche that the Musée national des arts asiatiques – Guimet is dedicating to the artist.

The gallery will also present on the booth a selection of Dani Karavan’s very (1930-2021) unique serie of Earth sculptures from 2014. The Israeli artist worked on these indoor sculptures at the end of his life. Dani Karavan named the Earth sculptures his chamber music works. For these new works, the artist used an innovative technique with concrete mad of raw brick. The sculptures recall the earthen villages of the artist’s childhood and remains from Canaanite and Israelite constructions more than 2000 years old. The Earth sculptures by Dany Karavan will resonate with the monochrome black 100 layers of ink by Yang Jiechang.
