Main d’œuvre – 20 years of Ergo Pers

Hanns Schimansky

Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, Den Haag, Netherlands

First shown at the Roger Raveelmuseum near Ghent, Belgium, the exhibition Main d’œuvre – 20 years of Ergo Pers is now presented at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag in Holland. Dutch publishing house Ergo Pers has spent the last twenty years bringing writers and artists together for the specific purpose of creating artist’s books that rank as autonomous works of art.

Each book is shown in combination with graphic work by the artist in question. The results are truly fascinating. A monumental work by Hanns Schimansky hangs beside a series of etchings by Philippe Vandenberg. Lithos by Jürgen Partenheimer are flanked by work by Raoul De Keyser, Ronald Noorman or Hanns Schimansky. The succession of images reveals surprising connections between the different artists. But Main d’œuvre is also a tribute to the past – an homage to the book and an homage to writers and artists no longer with us but who have left us such a marvellous legacy.

On this occasion, the Galerie Jeanne Bucher Jaeger has lent a selection of drawings by Hanns Schimansky, previously shown in his latest exhibition at the gallery in 2014 entitled jusqu’au bout du jardin…
