From the moment he took over the gallery in 1947 at age 23, Jean-François Jaeger learned painting, and regularly frequented the studio of Bertholle. Drawing his inspiration from medieval themes, the latter would become one of the principal artists exhibited at the boulevard du Montparnasse gallery in the 1950s. Bertholle later praised the talent of Roger Bissière, whom he met in 1934, to Jean-François Jaeger.
