Having oscillated for a long time between surrealism and abstraction, Bazaine presented in May 1941, in the occupied capital, the exhibition “Vingt Jeunes Peintres de tradition française” − in reaction to the cultural policy led under the Occupation − and achieve his own thematic, non-figurative paintings. The following month, Jeanne Bucher exhibited him at the Boulevard du Montparnasse gallery along with paintings by Pignon and sculptures by Jean Chauvin.
