Le monde de Fred Deux

Fred Deux

Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, France

The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon pays tribute to Fred Deux (1924-2015) by organizing the most comprehensive exhibition ever dedicated to the artist.

The exhibition gathers almost 180 drawings, which intend to re-create the polyphonic world of Fred Deux. Following a chronological thread, composed of those specific cycles, which characterized the artist need to « break his hand », the exhibition reveals the profound coherence of a work which, from the very beginning was narrowed down to only two simple tools : the line and the dot. From the Kleepathologie drawings, created in Marseille in the late 1940s to the major milestones, composed of monumental drawings of the 1980s, entitled « Otages, Spermes noirs et Spermes colorés, Autoportraits », which are in fact as unique books where the line is at the same time line and word, we come to see and experience the inner world of Fred Deux. Objects, fashioned by the artist as well as objects from Primitive Art (the artists private collection) appear to us as necessary presences, and echo the graphic work, thus inscribing it in the path of a life.
