L’espace en jeu

Maria Helena Vieira da Silva

Museum of modern art, Céret, France

Vieira da Silva is among the 20th-century artists that deeply redefined pictorial space, submitting it to their imagination and therefore opening new plastic, intellectual and spiritual dimensions. The legacy of cubism is very present in her work with the fragmentation and recomposition of the subject according to diverse angles. Stretching and distorting perspective, she transforms the space of the frame into a stage area. Painting thus seizes the magic of theatre and acting, becoming a place where reality meets imagination, where intention meets chance.

The exhibition “Vieira da Silva, l’espace en jeu” offers to the visitor the opportunity to discover her work, rarely presented in the South of France since the presentation of the donation to the Musée Fabre in Montpellier in 1994. The show offers a comprehensive overview of Vieira da Silva’s exceptional career with a coherent show nourished by deep and substantial pictorial researches. From her first anatomic drawings to her latest works on paper soaked with light – i.e. more than fifty years of creation, emphasis is given to her graphic work rarely seen, sometimes never shown before.

The show is organised with the collaboration of the Árpád Szenes – Vieira da Silva Foundation in Lisbon. The Galerie Jeanne Bucher Jaeger also provided a substantial help with the loans of emblematic works and photographs of the artists taken from its archives.
