Archéologie du présent

Zarina

Musée d'art moderne et contemporain, Saint-Étienne, France

In 2016, the new presentation of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Saint-Étienne collections invites the visitors to rediscover the place of objects in the history of art from the early 20th century until today. Highlighting all the mediums used (paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, collages, installations, wallpapers, videos, etc.) in a genuine time travel, this exhibition explores with a selection of 150 artworks the many facets of the object, confronting/initiating the public to the vision/universe of artists and major artistic trends.

The gallery lends the series “These Cities Blotted into the Wilderness” by Indian artist Zarina. In this series, the artist represented cities known for the civilisations they spawn, their history and their cultural influence. She addresses the troubling question of the way we see these cities today. Each print evokes the tragedies of war and terrorism, and also the irreversible devastations – material, physical, and especially psychological – they cause. Today, Baghdad is just a field of ruins in our mind, so are Beirut and Kabul. And one cannot invoke New York without bringing out the memory of 9-11. The black lines, soaked with ink, accentuate the force of this evocation. Zarina draws theses places to ensure the indelible mark of their tragic history on our minds will never fade.
